pQCT Explained

pQCT is a method of accessing bone mineral density which uses multiple cross-sectional x-rays to reconstruct a volumetric model of the bone density distribution. The analyzed bone mineral density is presented as mg/cm3.

Other densitometric technologies, using isotopes, x-rays, or ultrasound, yield results based upon a weighted average of combined trabecular and cortical bone. These older technologies employ a 2-D projection of the bone which super-imposes trabecular and cortical bone. They are, therefore, unable to isolate specific bone components.

The XCT 2000 L scans a distal radius or tibia site which is primarily composed of trabecular bone. Aditionally a diaphyseal site is scanned to obtain information about cortical density and geometry. The examination is easy and comfortable for the patient. Total procedure time is only about 90 s per slice. The measurement dose is less than 2 µSv, and is restricted to the forearm.

pQCT is a significant improvement over QCT. Conventional QCT uses a standard-sized CT scanner, is often difficult to set up, and is intimidating to the patient.

The pQCT Forearm Analysis

The analysis site is determined by a scout scan of the distal forearm. A comparison feature allows the operator to compare the current scan with a previous scan to assure consistent positioning.

After the measurement scan, the outer bone shell is "peeled off" and the remaining core is analyzed and its density in mg/cm3 is presented. The density of the total bone is also available.

Trending

The Trending Graph presents the density of all scans for the patient. Both the core and total values are displayed.
